The Language of the table:Micro-interactive Furniture Design Using Silicone Airbags

This work discusses potential forms of smart objects in the future, rethinking the relationship and interaction between people and objects.

With the development of computing, screens and new media have reconfigured our lives. The communication between people and objects is becoming homogeneous. This work uses computing and 3D printing to provide a new form of tables, exploring new ways of interaction beyond the screen, which response to the design question of how technology can be “quietly and interestingly” integrated into daily life.

With the development of information technology, some products obtain active perceptions of external things based on human needs, and then make decisions and act on the external environment. This new feature makes it feel like the product is alive. It seems to have the ability to reason and begin to have its own “language”.

In this work, I’m interested in: What new features can digital technology bring to the table? What new possibilities and experiences can it bring to people?

New digital manufacturing technologies (e.g. 3D printing) enable the table to have more changes in shape and appearance. New manufacturing technologies also offer the possibility of customized styles. In this work, I designed a vibrant organic form inspired by coral, which breaks people’s stereotypes about intelligent products. The smoothly breathing silicone “coral” creates a soft and intimate feeling in the space, responding to the problem: integrating smart technology into life.

An intelligent table should have new functions beyond its original function. Beyond the classical functions of human-desk interactions, intelligent products should offer different functional options through different mounted modules. Once learn about your living habits and routine activities, it can actively transmit messages to people, remind and assist you in completing other tasks.
