Pneumatic-based Design of Variable Structure Lighting Device

Luminsea enables physical interaction and light changes through airbag deformation.

The subject of this paper is the design and implementation of pneumatic-based variable structure lighting device, hoping to apply the pneumatic soft body as a driving form to the design of the lighting device that can be physically interacted with, providing a new way to implement and design ideas for physical interaction.

The main design goal of this paper is to use pneumatic soft body technology to create a variable structure using airbags and their related components, and to design a variable structure lighting device that constructs light changes through the movement and deformation of the variable structure.

This paper designs and completes a set of pneumatic-based interactive lighting device Luminsea. when the sensor recognizes that the user and the device are interacting, the air pump is activated to drive the deformation of the airbag to drive the change of the device shading components to produce the change of light. This special drive and deformation method demonstrates the new possibilities that pneumatic devices bring to physical interaction and provides a fun interactive experience for the user.

The analysis of qualitative results obtained through observation experiments and in-depth interviews with Luminsea’s subjects shows that the device can add interest to the design of display science, and can realize the interaction of light changes through pneumatic linkage, which can provide new design ideas and implementation methods for display device design.
